Which base model sedan is more practical: Civic or Mazda3?

When looking for your next compact sedan, don’t forget to look under the hood. Many compact vehicles skimp on power, but that’s not the case with either of these models. In fact, the Honda Civic Sedan LX comes out on top with 158 horsepower coming from it 2.0-liter engine. This engine also manages to produce 138 pound-feet of torque.

When it comes to the transmission, the Mazda3 relies on an automatic transmission. The Honda Civic LX CVT opts for a continuously variable transmission which makes for a smoother and more efficient ride. Here, the EPA estimated fuel economy numbers play out as the Civic Sedan LX CVT gets 31-city mpg and 40-highway mpg.* Both EPA mpg numbers are higher than that of the Mazda3 even though the Civic Sedan LX has more horsepower coming from its engine.

Automatic climate control is often considered a luxury feature, but the Honda Civic Sedan includes this feature standard even on the LX trim level. You will not find the feature on the Mazda3 Sport. With automatic climate control, you can set the desired temperature of your cabin, and the climate control system will throttle both the air conditioning and the heat to reach and maintain the desired temperature.

When you get a sedan, that also means that you get a trunk, and having a large trunk is a must for many. Here again, the Civic Sedan LX comes out on top with 2.7 cubic-feet more cargo room in the trunk.
